CUSTODIANS

I was shocked to see a bright chemical blue puddle in the field, caused by fertilizer run off. It was a visible illustration that we are harming our land and wildlife by farming in this way. I've worked with my father to implement regenerative practices such as restorative grazing and planting more wild flower cover crops.

My family has farmed for over six generations, now we are custodians for the future of our land and the wildlife within it.

“Custodians” is an outerwear utilitarian campaign collection worn by farmers to help raise awareness to the importance of protecting our land.

The design attributes are based upon my family's farming experience in different weather conditions. I have analysed the functions and materials required to keep the wearer dry and warm, including waterproof, windproof and insulated materials. My final designs are made from recycled and sustainable materials. Using British Wool in my jacquard design, paying homage to local and sustainable fibres.

This digitally embroidered patchwork jacket is made from farmyard wax clothing and shows an aerial view of our farms fields.

On our farm we plant a variety of wildflowers and grasses which are vital to increase biodiversity. These are the main visual sources for this project, as I wanted to highlight the importance of regenerative agriculture.

PATCHING    MENDING   REPURPOSING

I have repurposed old workwear found on our farm, including waxed over trousers, coats, overalls and waterproof coats. I have really enjoyed working with traditional farmwear materials. Combining traditional methods of repairing such as darning and patchwork with modern ways of fixing using digital embroidery. I’ve researched the history of farming workwear and how my ancestors farmed. Taking inspiration from how they cared for the earth.
